Pressions was a James Madison Memorial High School’s forum for creative writers. Pressions Press published chapbooks and an annual literary magazine. In the past Pressions sponsored the Greater Dane County Youth Poetry Festival, a poetry contest for high school writers in Dane and adjacent counties.
Pressions first appeared in the Spring of 1983. It was modeled after the small independent literary magazines of the 1960s and 1970s. It was not modeled after the glossy academic journals which publish interviews and essays. Our mission was to showcase poetry, fiction, and other modes of creative writing at a school which does not offer a creative writing elective. For three decades, most of the work Pressions has published was written not for a grade, but for the sake of writing. I remain impressed by the creativity of our students, and I am proud to have been part of the Memorial community which supports them. In recognition of our authors, the last section of this issue is an alphabetical index of the writers who have been published in Pressions over the years.
